Harnessing the desert’s energy

A European non-profit, DESERTEC, wants to harness the vast amounts of energy produced in the world’s deserts and bring it to population centers for usage. The organization wants to combine energy security and climate protection in its efforts, using existing technology such as concentrated solar power plants (CSP) to collect the energy and high voltage direct current transmission lines to transport the stored energy. The effort also hopes to bring jobs and economic opportunity to the less developed regions in which most of the deserts are located.
