Bill Thies’ talk at the CTED conference

One of the speakers of yesterday’s conference – Bill Thies of MSR India – discussed a novel way in which cellular technology can help to spread news using voice instead of text. The project, called CGNet Swara, uses mobile phones as a platform for information sharing in poor and unconnected areas. So-called “reporters” call a local number to upload a news item, at which point a text message is sent to all the phone numbers on a contact list. Anyone who wants to hear the report calls in to the same number and the message is played to the caller. We will post Bill Thies’ talk shortly on the CTED website.
